Speaking in stern and ominous tones, Vice President Dick Cheney warned Democrats Thursday night that attempts to politicize a pre-9-11 CIA briefing given to President Bush about possible al Qaeda hijackings could backfire on them and undermine the war on terrorism.

"Basically what I want to say to my Democratic friends in the Congress is that they need to be very cautious not to seek political advantage by making incendiary suggestions, as were made by some today, that the White House had advanced information that would have prevented the tragic attacks," Cheney told a dinner gathering in New York City.

He called comments from leading Democrats seeking to blame Bush for any 9-11 intelligence failure "thoroughly irresponsible and totally unworthy of national leaders in a time of war."

Both Senate Plurality Leader Tom Daschle and House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt, along with presidential hopeful Hillary Rodham Clinton and a whole host of lesser Democrats, have called for a probe into the White House's handling of intelligence they suggest could have prevented the 9-11 catastrophe.
