Successful Cooperation: Order Volume in This Segment Doubles Annually
UNTERPREMSTAETTEN/GRAZ, Austria--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 17, 2002-- Success for the international semiconductor manufacturer austriamicrosystems: Due to austriamicrosystems' RF and system know-how, this designer and producer of integrated circuits, who is renowned worldwide for special mixed signal solutions, has received an important order from France.

Store Electronic Systems (SES) has chosen the intelligent chip solution from Austria. With several million installed labels, SES is the leading European supplier of electronic shelf labels. Within the framework of a new cooperation, the largest French supermarket chain, Carefour S.A., will be equipped with austriamicrosystems technology.

Centrally controlled electronic shelf-labeling systems offer supermarkets a series of advantages, as manual insertion of labels into shelf rails is extremely labor-intensive, time-consuming and prone to error. In addition, special offers can be price-updated in no time. (e.g. reduced price of vegetables after 5 p.m.).

This is how it works: The price is put into a central computer and sent to the main register and the individual price labels on the shelves via radio server, which is the core of the system. The austriamicrosystems chips are inside the price labels. They receive the data and forward them to the display unit. These 0.35 um CMOS technology receiver components are manufactured in the 200 mm wafer fab that has been opened earlier this year by austriamicrosystems in Unterpremstatten. The next generation will contain a transmitter that facilitates a reply from the labels, ensuring price display accuracy.

The market potential is tremendous: Some prominent French retailers are already converting their systems to electronic shelf labeling, and are followed by other European supermarket groups. In the past four years, austriamicrosystems' order volume in this segement has almost doubled annually.

austriamicrosystems AG, headquartered in Unterpremstatten near Graz, is a world leader in design and manufacture of integrated analog/digital circuits (microchips), tailored to specific customer request. The company currently operates in 14 locations worldwide, with approximately 940 employees. In 2001, company sales reached EUR147.5 million.

Here is a picture of the ESL. All plastic engineering and screws onto shelf. A new (and better?) attachment. One doesn't often see rails on the heavy steel gondolas and vegie tables found in the new store layouts.
