TORONTO, May 14 /CNW/ - SAMSys Technologies Inc. (SMY:TSX-VEN) ("SAMSys"), a world leading provider of radio frequency identification (RFID) hardware solutions, today announced its support of and contribution to solidifying global standards for RFID technology by developing an ultra-high frequency (UHF) reader which will comply with recently drafted standards. The UHF reader, which is in the final stages of development for commercial availability in July 2002, marks the first multi-frequency and multi-protocol RFID hardware solution. "SAMSys' mandate is to achieve widespread implementation of RFID products globally and we are one step closer to achieving this by supporting this important international RFID standard," says Cliff Horwitz, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of SAMSys. "As a leader in the RFID space, SAMSys is building applications according to global standards which will accelerate progress and innovation within this bourgeoning industry." SAMSys' UHF reader is part of its SARS reader family, whose key feature is its flexible architecture that allows protocol changes and additions to be incorporated into the reader by updating the operating firmware remotely over an Internet connection. The initial version of SAMSys' UHF reader will support the air interfaces expected in the committee draft standard CD ISO/IEC 18000-6 type A and type B and will incorporate additional user requirements as soon as they are finalized by upgrading with the appropriate firmware. In this same manner, changes dictated by the final ISO18000-6 standard will be easily implemented. SAMSys continues to develop applications that adhere to the currently adopted RFID standards and to help support new standards as they emerge. In February 2002, the Uniform Code Council and EAN International announced the successful alignment of the technical requirements of their GTAG(TM) (Global Tag) standards initiative, with vendors contributing to the ISO 18000-6 standard. EAN-UCC GTAG is a user-driven global standards initiative, designed to provide a multi-industry RFID solution and to encourage the proliferation of RFID systems in asset management and supply chain applications. Chris Hook, GTAG project director commented, "EAN and UCC have worked diligently with the vendor community to ensure that the GTAG standard has the support required to deliver flexible solutions that meet end- user requirements. As head of the GTAG project, I am delighted with SAMSys' responsiveness to the publication of the committee draft standard of ISO 18000- 6, which is the technical foundation for GTAG. Furthermore, SAMSys' innovations in multi-protocol readers provide our members, who number nearly 1 million worldwide, with the class of product required to allow them to apply with confidence now, with the assurance of future-proofing as standardsmature." |
