Nicarauga is now a democracy. Previously it was a left wing dictatorship. Although I get he impression you don't mind those.

That's quite a twisted view on reality. Nicaragua had a brutal, unpopular dictator named Somoza, supported heavily by the U.S. right through his worst oppression. It didn't matter whether the Presidents were Democrat or Republican, as you well know. He was overthrown by the Sandinistas, a popular organization. They won 67% of the vote in 1984 (certainly more than the current American President).
