JohnM,

The primary reason you have seen the Microsoft and IBM dominate web services stories is because IBM has planted them. IBM is in an active campaign to surf Microsoft's slip stream now that it is apparent that Web services is catching on with customers. IBM is also attempting to cut Sun off at the pass at the same time. The big fish are staking out their territory in the early days of Web services. I would expect to see the Sun counter attack any time. Microsoft loves seeing everyone beating themselves up claim pride of place on Microsoft's turf. BEA does not have the resources or the need to fight this game right name.

I expect we will begin to see the 'American Dream' and 'David vs. Goliath' stories begin to appear in the mainstream press over the next six months. These will be planted by BEA as the begin to stoke the initial breezes of a tornado.

I will have to write an Investor's Guide to the Technology Hype cycle someday. The current press situation is right on course. The next stage for Web Services are the "Another next big thing disappoints customers" and ".NET delayed again" and "Are Web Services technologies waterloo" stories.

Paul
