Re: They are public servants, albeit of the highest order, but nevertheless they answer to "We, the People". Isn't that true. Or if not, when did it stop being true?


A few years ago, I was living in San Francisco. Taking the Muni bus one day, I was incensed by something I saw in the newspaper about some unjust perk that Mayor Willie Brown had just offered to the criminal who used to own the SF 49ers football team. I blurted out that Brown couldn't get away with such a galling give-away of the public's money and that he was a "public servant", not our master. Almost universally, a dozen bus-riders snickered at my naivete. They know the score. And you and I don't. We're still stuck at that pollyannish fifth grade level where we think that truth, honesty, ethics and integrity have anything whatsoever to do with what this country has become.
