those of you who are (practicing) ee's what's your take on this issue and it's affect on the eternal amd vs intel saga?

It should be pretty obvious that as the features get smaller and smaller and the R&D costs get bigger and bigger, AMD falls farther and farther behind. They are now close to a year behind Intel in process technology and maybe more. The gap will likely widen when Intel moves to 90nm, in fact, Intel will probably have a 90nm process very soon.

someone on this tread once tried to paint hammer as a disruptive tech. I don't think that is true (to me, hammer seems clearly evolutionary not revolutionary) but perhaps the next real disruptive tech will be a process technology?

The only thing remarkable that we have seen regarding hammer is the hype pumped out by AMD. Considering AMD's problems with performance, manufacturing and process technology, it's clear that no matter what the truth turns out to be, AMD couldn't possibly come out and ask the market to wait for a mediocre product. The unseen and unavailable upcoming product is always going to knock their socks off, particularly when you've got nothing else today to keep folks interested.
