PRESS RELEASE - GUYANA MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

SURINAME PROPOSES MEETING OF SUB-COMMITTEE ON MAY 30, 2002, BORDER COMMISSION ON JUNE 25-26,2002

he Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to state that the news release issued by the Government Information News Agency on May 16, 2002 does not accurately reflect the progress made by Guyana and Suriname to facilitate formal discussions on issues related to the border between the two countries. It will be recalled that the Presidents of Guyana and Suriname had agreed to establish a Sub-Committee of the Border Commissions to look at best practices and modalities that could assist in the taking of a decision regarding an eventual joint exploration.

The Presidents had mandated the Sub-Committee to meet before the next meeting of the Border Commissions so that its findings and recommendations could be deliberated on by the latter body.

In keeping with that decision and following discussions between the two parties a proposal has been received from the Government of Suriname for the Sub-Committee of the Border Commissions to meet on May 30, 2002 and for the Fourth Meeting of the Border Commissions to take place on June 25 and 26, 2002.
