Dell 8200 with 1.25 Gb RDRAM

For those who may be interested, I recently purchased (from DELL Asia-Pacific) 2 x DELL 8200 machines each with 256 Mb RDRAM. I needed at least 1Gb per m/c as they were to run Oracle and BEA Web Logic for some software we are developing). The price DELL was asking - just for an upgrade to 1Gb was $AUD3000 which is about $US1600. It would have been economic madness to have them upgraded by DELL. So to each machine I added 2 x 512Mb Samsung RIMMs (MR18R162GAFO-CK8) which one of our guys in the US purchased from Techmia for US$245 and shipped separately to us.

Anyway, the upgrade was a cinch and each m/c now carries 1.25 Gb. They work very well and are super-fast - handling our demanding requirements with ease.

The main point I wished to make was that to help a friend who had a heavy-duty commercial video editing job, we lent him one of our machines for a week. The DELL astonished him with its peformance. A job which his dual P-III 500 Mhz machine took over 50 hours to do was completed in under 10 hours by the Dell. Overall he calculated its performance as about 6 times as fast as his own benchmark box. He couldn't have done the job without it.

We now have a new convert to Rambus.

Regards,
Quoll.
