What prevents an extremist, terrorist group from overthrowing the current government, and reinstating an anti-peace government? The answer is, absolutely nothing. It has happened before (Saddam Hussein came to power in Iraq), and it will happen again. That is the opinion of many Israelis who do not want to give up land to the Arabs who, they feel, cannot be trusted. Some think that the Palestinians are trying to get enough land and power in Israel in order to take it over. It is a controversial issue that has divided the State of Israel. Can the Arabs be trusted? Do they really want peace, or just land? Will peace last? All of these questions have caused such controversy, that an internal struggle has arisen within the State of Israel. This struggle has caused problems that were never apparent before; and rather than making peace has caused unprecedented political and civil unrest within the nation. For the first time in the history of the nation, a Jewish leader was assassinated by a fellow Jew, when Yigal Amir assassinated Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. Interestingly enough, Benjamin Netanyahu was elected to be the new prime minister of Israel over Shimon Peres. Peres was a supporter of Rabin and promised to follow in his footsteps and continue with the peace process. Netanyahu also wanted to continue the peace process, but was not so quick to relinquish control of Israeli land.

Terrorism has hit Israel hard in the past few years. It is very difficult for the Israeli army to defend against it, and it is possibly one of the most devastating means of death and destruction. Terrorism has been a major method of attack used by the Palestinians since 1950. It is the Palestinian way of confronting Israelis and exhibiting control while spreading fear. What’s worse is that terrorist organizations are facilitated by Arab governments. A terrible series of bus bombings took place between 1995 and 1996. Hundreds of Israeli civilians, tourists, and soldiers were killed. The Palestinian terrorist group Hamas took credit for the bombings. With regard to the recent Israeli withdrawal from Hebron, Hamas leader Nizar Ramadan says that Hamas is “against the Oslo accords and against the Hebron agreement” (Daily News From Israel). Hamas, however, after talks with Yasir Arafat, agreed not to attack . In the Hebron agreement, Israel agrees to relinquish control of eighty percent of Hebron and Israel promises three more West Bank withdrawals by mid - 1998. Nevertheless, terrorism can cause an immediate halt in all the peace processes, since the Israeli government will not tolerate any terrorist actions
