If we had Venus or Mars economies would be much and from obvious reasons easier to predict, or at least debate.

Re: Japan versus China. I would say both, but it will take time for China to rediscover their natural invention skills. Japanese pride IMHO will eventually take over, unless their overeducated young generation is too paralyzed to take the action and charge. China is already manufacturing kingdom of the world - Walmart is like their factory outlet.
