I got a crazy problem and I am pretty sure no one can help because I really can't explain it.

Running win.98 second edition.
For the past few weeks I have been having lots of little problems that I have never had before.
Example's:
A. When I send a PM on SI I get the following message
A runtime Error has occurred Do you wish to debug?
Line:254
Error document.compose form.memo text is null or not an object.
B. My windows have been crashing a lot lately and before they never crashed.
C. When I try to run a scan disk or a defrag on my computer it takes for ever (in the past it was fast and smoooth) now I keep getting a message saying: Scandisk has started and restarted several times. When I do a defrag it stops goes back to be beginning and starts all over again. Now it takes for ever to defrag.
D. Lately my hard drive has been making funny noises all day. I don't know how to explain this other than it sounds like a program is running in the background or something.

I have lots of other little problems but I hope you get the idea with this post.
My first guess is some how I have a program running somewhere and this is what causes the scandisk and defrag to stop and start over because new data is being written. If this is the case I simply cannot find a program that is running and I have tried CLR+ALT+Del several times and I can't seem to find it. Also when I check my system resources it seems to be running at a very low level. In the past it has never done this before.

Any ideas to send me in the right direction will help.
