I too am amazed that people are willing to pay $1.70 for gas and the malls and eateries are full too. So we're not in any depression that's for sure. But they are not flying as much and they seem content sticking to within driving range. They also seem content with old cell phones and maybe have put off buying up to a new home. My concern is what effect will higher jobless claims have on their mood ? Surely the jobless numbers will be going up not down any time soon. I would say the consumer stocks are good bets but they are not value plays at this point. The value plays are at scary low levels and I have a bunch of them (SUNW. CSCO, JNPR). Not sure when and if the strong consumer will be able to help my batch of stocks.
