As in the US so in Europe - Europe telecoms crisis to last couple years-KPN

AMSTERDAM, May 19 (Reuters) - The crisis in the debt-burdened European telecoms sector could drag on for a couple of years, but Dutch KPN is in better shape than rivals in France or Germany, KPN Telecom NV KPN.AS said on Sunday.

"The crisis will last a couple of years. It will take a few years for companies to get rid of their debt situation," spokesman Bram Oudshoorn told Reuters.

"There's little room for innovation because companies have to concentrate on their debt situation. But KPN is already in a much better position than France Telecom FTE.PA and Deutsche Telekom DTEGn.DE in that respect." The bidding war among European telecoms companies for next-generation mobile phone frequencies left companies "dramatically impoverished", KPN Chief Executive Ad Scheepbouwer said in an interview in the weekend edition of the Algemeen Dagblad newspaper.

"That is enough to nearly paralyse the sector," he added.
