Last night I watched HBO's movie about LBJ and his tragic ending. George McBundy served the role of scold in the Johnson cabinet. And, of course, McBundy was completely correct in his assessment that our involvement in Viet Nam would fail. However, toward the end, even his will was broken by the headlong race to insanity that our government engaged in. Once the military is given the upper hand, it is truly hard to get them to put themselves back in the barracks. They see their job as killing, they are very good at it, and once turned loose to engage in their aggression, they are loathe to have their baser instincts controlled.
