Actually, that part isn't a joke. It's of course a signal that the speaker has a securely superior relationship to the described(as well as some affection for her.) (That's why it isn't used any more except as a joke. Men don't feel so secure in their superiority to make such a self-denigrating remark....) That's MY take on the term "better half"! Did I just accidentally re-ignite the gender wars?
