here's my suggestion. if it's already been given, sorry.

1. shut down all background applications except explorer and systray

2. a little freeware utility program called enditall works great for this process. i recommend version 1.0. i've heard 2.0 is buggy. v1.0 is hard to come by on the net right now. i checked my hd and i see i have a zipped copy of enditall1.0 (392kb) that i could email to you if you like. here's a link to a site where you used to be able to get v1.0. at least you can see it's a valid tool.

3. after all background apps are closed (except for the two i mentioned), forget about scandisk and run a symantec program (norton disk doctor) on your machine from the cd-rom drive. if you wish to purchase the software, so be it. but you can also find a friend with a disk (either norton utilities or norton systemworks will do), and just pop the disk in and run the tool from there. it is a far better disk diagnostic tool than what windows packages with their operating systems. you can also go to the symantec site and download trialware versions of norton utilities that will allow you to run disk doctor. while you're at it, run speed disk and win doctor as well.

btw, someone once told me via pm that i was "shoving symantec products down people's throats", or similar words to that effect.

i hope my advice is not viewed in that manner. i have used norton stuff for 5 years now and i believe in their merit. does their software ever give people problems? yes. does it ever fix problems? YES
