I agree with the size comparison, and I also agree that the political enviroment of the US will most likly not tolerate a deflationary enviroment to persist. The pain would be too great on the populous to not cause major upheavels. It is what occured during the collapse of the thirties though. Bonds that didn't default were powerful positive investments in a world that saw stock values decimated. It is occurring in Japan currently and is possible here. But I think that when push comes to shove the politicans will take the course of least resistance and inflate their way out of the mess, or at least try to. One economist described the liklihood of deflation occurring to seeing every banker and politican hung by their Gucci ties when the public feels the pain of trying to pay the debt burden they have had heaped upon them. Faced with that they will most likly disenfranchise the capital providers, i.e. screw the bondholders, big time.
