I am speculating that the West (US, EU, ...) will engineer the Palestenian elections to foist Hassam Abdel Kader. And then that will force the hands of Israel to abandon the settlements and withdraw to the 1967 line. But Osama's proxy (Hamas) could upset all the plans and I bet the Israelis are hoping that that happens and suicide attacks continue.

There will be nothing but pretend reforms of the PA as long as Arafat and his cronies are in the picture, so it doesn't matter what the West tries to engineer. I don't see anything on the horizon to force Israel's withdrawal to the 1967 line. Do you understand the difference between the withdrawal proposed at Taba and the 1967 line? The June 4, 1967 line would mean giving the land around Jerusalem which Israel annexed and then built entire city neighborhoods on, and redividing the city. That's not going to happen voluntarily imo. Ever. The Taba proposals, which included shared sovereignty over East Jerusalem, might be on the table if the Israelis thought they had a peace partner. Right now, Israelis across the political spectrum are quite sure that Arafat is not a peace partner.

As for Hamas, Saudi Arabia is now telling them to lie low, but they can't do so for long -- the armed struggle is their entire raison d'etre. So sooner or later Hamas will have a 'lucky day' and Israel will do Operation Defensive Shield Part II. After all, even sources such as the Guardian are now agreeing that Part I was a win for the Israelis.
