I've been puzzling with your ends/means conundrum.

Not elegant, but "the ends don't absolve the means or the meanies" comes to mind. However, don't ask Bill Gates about that.....or Lay, or Skilling or any of those sorts. Seems that in American business, the ends always justify the means.
