As Arafat Critics Close In, Deputies Vie in the Wings
By JOHN KIFNER

Read this piece in the Times this morning. Fascinating.

1. Kifner argues that Arafat's popularity plummeted as a result of the Bethlehem settlement. Up to that point, he was viewed as a courageous fighter; after that, not.

2. He notes serious infighting at the level just below Arafat in the hierarchy, and, of course, between that level and Arafat. Kifner seems to think Barghouti has the edge but he (Kifner) keeps hedging his bets, particularly with his discussion of the two security chiefs.

3. Where does Hamas fit into this mix? Do they have enough power to alter this lineup?
