0.13micron Athlon XP to Start Selling in July? Posted 5/20/02 at 11:23 pm by Rat
As is known, AMD is going to announce its 0.13micron Athlon XP processors on June 10. However, we know very well that the CPU announcement and the first actual selling pieces are two totally different things. According to The Inquirer, we may not see the first 0.13micron Athlon XP processors in retail stores until late June or even mid July.
The reason for that, as you may have already guessed, is AMD’s inability to supply enough of 0.13micron Athlon XP CPUs. Supposedly, AMD will do its best to supply enough processors to their No. 1 partner, Hewlett-Packard Company (which now includes Compaq as well), i.e. they will try to provide Hewlett-Packard the so-called “most-favoured-nation treatment”, just like Intel does to Dell. And only when Hewlett-Packard receives enough CPUs (which is quite a huge amount, I should say), they will start shipping to other distributors.
Of course, AMD would be happy to start shipping the new stuff to all its partners simultaneously, however, its capabilities in this respect are now very limited. In fact, I have already shared all my suppositions on that with you that is why The Inquirer’s news seems to me pretty credible.
