Someone in my family got VERY upset with me after he showed me his $2000+ powerful MAC computer. WHy? I suggested many times before he upgraded and dumbly reminded him again that he would have been able to surf on AOL 10x faster for only $50 a month with the old one if he just bought broadband. He surfs the web, reads email and plays with screensavers at age 69. I think people's OS and desktop gets so messed up that it doesn't pay to have it reloaded when small things keep breaking so they just buy new.

one friend of mine couldn't get dsl to work on her PC due to the firewall that we removed to see if it would run faster... Zonealarm. It turns out the uninstall of Zonealarm renders the PC useless for any internet access unless you reload from scratch. She decided it was better to upgrade and buy new. Now she can watch DVDs on the plane!

bottom line... I agree. People don't upgrade just because they need processor speed.
