Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty on Terror Alert

NEW YORK — The New York Police Department was ramping up security at the Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn Bridge Tuesday afternoon following terrorist threats on two of America's most treasured landmarks.

Officials at the FBI and Justice Department said they were aware of the warning, and that the NYPD was working with information culled from interviews at Guantanamo Bay with captured Al Qaeda and Taliban fighters being held there, including high-ranking Al Qaeda operative Abu Zubaydah.

One official said the alert would last at least through the Memorial Day weekend.

The official stressed that the information used to formulate the alert was "uncorroborated and unsubstantiated," and that the FBI will not be issuing any threat warnings of its own.

Security in the New York area has already been tightened for the city's annual Fleet Week, which begins on Wednesday.

WCBS Radio in New York reported that Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly was meeting with his staff to determine what details of the threats should be made public.
