Daily times condemning the extremists and mullahs today in Lahore.. this is against excesses of Islamic law and extremists who are after a writer like me however a far bigger one....

Long live Ardeshir Cowasjee

We take pride in the fact that there has been no communal backlash in our country following the anti-Muslim pogrom in Gujarat recently. But that is not to say that bigots and extremists have been banished from our shores following General Pervez Musharraf's passionate speech last January. Indeed, fellow journalist Ardeshir Cowasjee has complained of receiving dire threats from exactly such forces in the recent past for writing against the excesses of so-called Islamic laws left over on the statute books from the worst days of General Zia ul Haq and Nawaz Sharif.

This is nothing new for Mr Cowasjee. He is a courageous man who stands for justice. But it is a matter of concern that he should be subjected to such treatment by certain elements in full view of General Pervez Musharraf without any action being taken against them by the General's government.

These threats should not be taken as idle. We are dealing here with elements whose whole philosophy of life is based on the suppression of truth by means of violence, destruction and arson. Therefore the authorities must make absolutely sure that no harm comes to Mr Cowasjee. At any rate, the state should not tolerate any individual or group that resorts to vigilante action or instigates others to it.
