Ref < Star Office vs Microsoft Office >

I presume that The Star Office can read Microsoft Word and Excel Output Files. But can the Star Office generate files compatible with Word and Excel ?

In this age of E-mailing Word and Excel attachments, the Star Office must read files from other users outside the company. But the Star Office must also be able to send files to people outside the organization, and have them read them. That is the tryanny of the massive installed base of Microsoft Office. This requirement may be critical until the StarOffice installed base becomes large enough, and most users have Star Office anyway.
