I have only tasted ouzo once-- I was sitting on the balcony of a hotel in Corfu, looking out at the ocean thinking Shirley Valentine thoughts, and decided that for this to be a complete moment I needed to drink something significantly and meaningfully Greek.

My husband said there was a little bottle of ouzo in the bar frig and that would be very appropriate.

6.00, the thing cost, but these symbolic gestures are important, so I opened it. Raising the bottle to the ocean (somehow the glasses from the bathroom didn't fit the image, me and the ocean, hair blowing in the warm breeze) I whispered, Yasas! and drank-- and immediately gagged.
That stuff is BAD!
BUt for 6.00 I had to drink it. I tried to give it to my husband but he just sneered and sipped his Chivas, so I choked it down. By the end of it, it tasted better.
