Exactly. If a drunken husband beats his wife because she burned the pot roast again, do we try and give her cooking lessons? Do we try and uncover the *reason* he broke her jaw? Understand his motives?

No. The correct course of action is to either put him in jail, or just look the other day when one day she decides she can't take the abuse anymore and kills him in self defense.
