Basic couple of questions.

Can someone take a short position on margin? It is just selling shares not already owned with no time variable?
When selling short (selling a stock not owned I believe?), then all you need to do is buy back equal shares to close it, then sell it again to realize the gain or loss - which would be 3 transactions correct? If this is true, someone can't sell short a position which they already own (it would just sell part or all of existing holding)...is this right too?
