Korea Telecom Selects Riverstone for Nationwide Metro Core Build Out -- More Than 100 RS 38000 Metro Aggregation Routers to Be Deployed in New Metro Backbone Riverstone Connects Korea Telecom's Network From Metro Core to Access Edge
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 22, 2002-- Metropolitan area networking pioneer Riverstone Networks (Nasdaq:RSTN - News) today announced that KT (formerly Korea Telecom) has selected Riverstone's metro routers for its nationwide metro core network. The deployment of more than 100 RS 38000 metro aggregation routers will enable KT to expand its nationwide network to provide next-generation residential and business services, including on-demand bandwidth provisioning and virtual private networking (VPN) applications, to its more than 20 million subscribers throughout South Korea.
KT is leading the Korean market, which according to recent analyst reports has in excess of 55 percent broadband penetration. All of Korea's major telecommunications carriers, including KT, DACOM, Hanaro Telecom, and PowerComm, have deployed Riverstone's metro routers.
"This win clearly demonstrates Riverstone's leadership in the Korean metro market," said Marian Stasney, senior analyst with the Yankee Group. "Riverstone was one of the first companies to pursue this market and has capitalized on its rapid growth. This announcement with KT is evidence that Riverstone provides carriers not only with the features and functionality they demand but also with the support they need after deployment."
Last year, KT chose Riverstone for its Ntopia project to provide one, five, and 10 MB Internet connectivity services to 80,000 residential units. With the current nationwide core deployment and the previous Ntopia deployment, Riverstone is delivering a metro core-to-access edge solution within KT's network, providing high-speed broadband services and aggregation and routing capabilities in the new countrywide core. Riverstone routers also interoperate smoothly with a variety of commodity switches providing in-building services.
"This is our second major win with KT," said Andrew Feldman, Riverstone's vice president of corporate marketing and corporate development. "With this new deployment, Riverstone routers will sit in every crucial part of KT's metro, from the core to the access edge, providing an end-to-end metro solution."
Riverstone's end-to-end metro solution leverages Korea's SONET/SDH national backbone as well as low-cost, high-bandwidth services to businesses and consumers. With its combination of advanced routing, hardware and software redundancy, MPLS, path protection, and link layer resiliency features, Riverstone enables KT to provide an exceptional grade of service over its nationwide network.
Since 1999, broadband growth in Korea has exploded. One-third of all new broadband access subscribers in the world this year will be in Korea. |
