You don't have to save half if you invest a portion of your savings in higher risk/higher return investments and do it early enough. Its the putting it in the bank because I don't want to lose principle that makes it impossible for them to retire at the same level.

You have to engage risk, either by leverage (as in real estate), buying value stock at a discount, growth (before its evident its growth) or bond investments that are higher risk. You can't save for retirement with a savings vehicle that simply keeps you even with inflation. Americans are quite aware of this and this is why they are investors, not savers.
