Chartered presses harder to narrow technology gap with foundry rivals

SINGAPORE -- Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Pte. Ltd. expects to begin receiving its first revenues from 0.13-micron processed wafers in the second half of 2002, with sales volumes becoming "noticeable" in the fourth quarter.

The Singapore silicon foundry company is also pushing harder to expand the use of its 0.18-micron process, and it expects wafer shipments from that technology node to account for more than 20% of its second-quarter revenues, said Chartered officials this week. The 0.18-micron processes accounted for only 4% of Chartered's revenues in the third quarter of 2001 and about 10% of sales in Q1 this year.

The ramp of 0.13-micron and expansion of 0.18-micron processes are key elements in Chartered's attempts to catch up with its larger foundry rivals in Taiwan. During a conference call with analysts this week, Chartered's recently appointed chief executive officer, Jim Norling, said the foundry company continues to emphasize the closing of the technology gap between itself and other leading suppliers.
