>nations are born free or slave, we won our independence and they should win it without expecting too much from us, the chapter has to stop and their rights can only be given by a democratic India, if they deny it we can't help it.>

Remember that Sheikh Abdullah and his National Front of Kashmir were part of the same independence movement against the British that involved the Muslim League and the Indian National Congress. So Kashmiris too have earned their right to vote.

Iqbal, tell me about Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. What do you know about it? If Islamic militants are camping there, what is the quality of life there? Are the women in similar condition as in Afghanistan under the Taliban? Or is their condition comparable to women in Lahore or Islamabad? All I know is that many Kashmiri militants have made life miserable for some women in the Sringar valley. There were incidents where women were threatened with acid on their faces if they did not wear their burqas. And Kashmiri Hindus were driven out of the valley in the 1980s itself. And many still live in refugee camps.

That is not to distract from the injustices that Indian governments have forced on the Kashmiris. The fixed elections. The jailing of their political leaders. But the Kashmiris are living in a dream world if they think that they can be an independent state in that part of the world. China has already taken up a portion of Kashmir. I don't know how life is in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.

The Indian Government is making a serious effort to bring Kashmiri political parties into the election process. They should take that chance. This is not the first time India has accepted seceding states into the Indian electoral process. Examples are Tamilnadu, Mizos and Assam. And the argument that Kashmiris cannot go with India because Srinagar valley is Muslim is weak. Goa was predominantly Catholic in 1961. But since then it has become a part of India with little protest. And the confrontation with the Nizam of Hydrabad in 1948 was short. Since then Hyderabad has a good mix of Hindu/muslim cuture and has not been a problem city.
