Return to Sender: Why aren't analysts pounding the table with renewed buy recommendations? I believe the analyst game of stock promotion is ending. The Merrill Lynch settlement is just the beginning. All of the major firms will be the subject of intense scrutiny by state regulators and attorneys-general. Although I doubt it, free "research" by sell-side analysts may someday be of some value to retail investors. As far is the semi equipment manufacturers, the outlook will remain bleak until something causes end demand to pick up. With cell phones and telecom demand falling and the computer and IT market stagnant, any hope of turnaround at this point is wishful thinking.
