America West Airlines Announces Ninth Circuit Decision

PHOENIX, July 11 /PRNewswire/ -- America West Airlines, Inc. (NYSE:AWA) announced today that the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed an earlier
U.S. District Court decision regarding the certification of the Teamsters Union as the collective bargaining representative of the airline's mechanics.

In its opinion, the appellate court endorsed the decision by District Court Judge Roger G. Strand on a technical legal point, ruling that the federal courts do not have
jurisdiction to review determinations made by the National Mediation Board (NMB) regarding who is entitled to vote in union representation elections. The NMB is
the federal government agency charged with oversight of labor relations in the airline and railroad industries. America West began negotiations with the Teamsters
late last year and continues, through a federal mediator, to pursue a contract.

America West is considering its legal options following the Ninth Circuit ruling.

America West, the nation's ninth largest airline, serves more than 90 destinations in the U.S., Mexico and Canada, offering travelers the same full-service product
they have come to expect from other national airlines but with low fares. America West Airlines ranked number one in customer satisfaction among nine major U.S.
carriers for short-haul flights in this year's Airline Customer Satisfaction-U.S. Flights Study conducted by Frequent Flyer Magazine and J.D. Power and Associates.

America West Airlines is a wholly owned subsidiary of America West Holdings Corporation, an aviation and travel services company with annual sales of more
than $1.7 billion.
