Applied Films tumbles on Well Fargo downgrade (AFCO) 17.42 -3.03: Has traded down sharply in reaction to pre-market downgrade by Wells Fargo Sec to MKT PERFORM from Buy. Firm believes Coca-Cola may be actively seeking alternatives to the Applied Films system. Specifically, firm believes Coca-Cola is exploring the possibility of outsourcing the coating process altogether by having a third party coat unmolded PET blanks with some type of barrier film. Wells is cutting its FY03 est to $0.45 from $0.61. Firm now values AFCO at $18.50 vs previous target of $28.

Applied Films defended by CIBC (AFCO) 18.44 -2.01: -- Update -- CIBC is defending AFCO after Wells Fargo downgraded the co over concerns about their KO contract (see 10:32 comment); CIBC says that although the KO contract was part of the growth story, it made up only a small part of the firm's 2003 ests for AFCO.
