Samsung Investigated for Infringing Toshiba Patents (Update2)
By Ian King

Seoul, May 24 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. International Trade Commission said it is investigating Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest maker of computer-memory chips, for allegedly infringing on U.S. semiconductor patents held by Toshiba Corp.

The trade commission said it decided to investigate after receiving a complaint from Toshiba, Japan's second-largest chipmaker, on April 22. The investigation was announced in a statement posted on the commission's Web site.

At issue is dynamic random-access memory chips --Samsung's main product -- alpha microprocessors, chip packages, graphic- memory chips and flash-memory chips, the release said.

``We are trying our best to reach an agreement with Toshiba through negotiation,'' said Sonia Kim, a Samsung spokeswoman. ``If that fails we will prepare a legal response to Toshiba's claims.''

Toshiba asked the U.S. to issue a ``a permanent exclusion order and permanent cease and desist orders'' on the U.S. sale of the Samsung components, which are uses in products such as personal computers, printers and digital cameras.
