Sanmina-SCI Completes Purchase of French Plant Online staff -- Electronic News, 5/23/2002 e-insite.net Sanmina-SCI Corp. has completed its acquisition of Alcatel’s Cherbourg, France-based manufacturing facility, the companies said today. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. The San Jose-based electronics contract manufacturer announced in January that it was purchasing the French facility, as well as Alcatel’s manufacturing plants in Gunzenhausen, Germany, and Toledo, Spain. The plants comprise nearly 1 million square feet of space. Sanmina-SCI gained about 1,500 employees through the deal, which also includes a multi-year supply contract. The French facility produces point-to-point microwave systems for applications in frequency bands from 1.5GHz up to 38GHz. The plant in Germany produces high-end voice switching and data transmission systems for central office applications, and the facility in Spain produces wireline access products that deliver narrowband, broadband and next-generation services. The Spanish plant will become Sanmina-SCI’s European center of excellence for wireline access product manufacturing and test. The purchase of the German plant was cleared in April and the acquisition of the Spain-based facility is expected to close during the summer, SCI-Sanmina said.
