People here complain about the complexity of the tax system. The "Tax Pack" we get each year is maybe 200 pages of explanations together with the form. However, if you follow through it is extremely clear. Most people don't do their own taxes though. I found the US system and the literature provided by IRS far more confusing. Once when I asked a tax lawyer about my status as non-resident/resident alien etc. she said that the IRS don't understand what the rules are. I now know the rules which are different to the way it is confusingly explained in the documentation for the 1040NR.

I am not looking forward to it now my tax affairs are more complex than when I last lived in the US. At least this time I will be a resident alien rather than non-resident alien which should make life a little easier.

To tell the truth when we were students we all submitted 1040EZs and got refunds though we should have been filing 1040NRs.

How much non-salary income do you need to earn before you need to submit a quarterly statement? I've always felt that those are outrageous as if people have nothing better to do than file tax returns. Maybe the accountants and tax preparers lobbied for it. I've just managed to avoid having to file one here.
