Rumsfeld's grotesque view comes from his position as the hermetically-sealed SecDef, with all the war toys and tools of national power. He chooses the wrong premise, a premise that acknowledges his power as SecDef, but not the American lifestyle goals and freedom from fear. "We are trying ... but failing. But hey, we can live with that". "Let's accept that" is the message. No, let's not accept that. Dr. Strangelove described a world he could live with also, without hesitation. It is time to review our premises, and avoid the sleep of reason that has been dropping over Washington.
