ENCINO, Calif. -- An explosion has rocked a residential building near Los Angeles, leaving the building in flames.

Fire officials say the blast hit the building in the Encino area around 11 a.m. It's not clear if it's an apartment or a condominium complex.

There's debris from the building in an area around the complex.

The building is located on the 5300 block of Newcastle Avenue in Encino. Twenty-six fire engines are on the scene according to Bob Collis, a spokesman for the Los Angeles City Fire Department. Collis said that at least 130 firefighters are on the scene. According to Collis, approximately one-third of the firefighters are involved in firefighting while the other two-thirds are involved in rescue efforts.

Collis said the cause of the explosion will not be investigated until after the fire has been extinguished. He said that the fire is burning freely, but appears to be confined to the one apartment building.

There are unconfirmed reports of one person suffering third-degree burns as a result of this incident. Collis indicated that the injury toll is likely to be higher.

Ada Fallick, who lives in the neighborhood, said she heard an explosion before noticing the fire. She said she initially thought the noise was connected to an earthquake.

Details are still being gathered on this breaking news situation.
