Weird win2k stuff. Upgrade Replace 5gig with 80 gig drive.
Upgrading a win 2000 machine with usb plotter, camera and usb mem stick reader.

This system originally had nt 4 and then win 2k installed on a fat partition C: that was only 1 gig. Also some application were installed on an E partition on a second 20 gig drive.

I did not want to install rebuild all of win 2k so I figured I'd try partition magic to move the install to the C and E drives. Well It turns out that Partition magic could move but count not move/copy partition C: to C: but moved it to G: or whatever. Anyway I could move it to D: and the E: I got to E: and the system booted and worked fine except for an old nt 4 vintage app that came with my epson printer, Presswriter. I just edited the c:\ssss\s\\s... etc to D:\... and that was OK. I then found my usb stick reader was fine but I could not get my umax usb scanner to work. Well actually it worked and then would not and then would and it was dog slow when it did.?????? It kept giving me a com link error when it would not work. I reinstalled and removed the latest driver from umax a few times.. So I then installed my F707 camera that also is USB and looks like a removable drive. Then my scanner started working but very slowly. Then if I removed the camera, the scanner would stop working the was like kinda what happened with my sony mem stick usb reader over the last couple of days.

Cutting to the chase.... It seem the the umax scanner is hard coded to write a log file to the C: drive. It turns out that orginally either the Camera F707 or the Sony mem stick reader would be allocated the first letter unasighed drive whenever they were in stalled. So what was happening is the if either was installed the mem stick provided the C: drive and the scanner would work but writing USB to the sticks is very slow and the scanner seemed to take forever to do anything.

So the solution was to take one of the partison on my first 80 gig drive and assign it to C: Now the scanner works just fine. Also a few times when I was attempting to scan and was changing mem stick readers the system hung. Well I now know why.

So what works.
2 number nine rev 4 cards driving 2 SGI sw1600 1600x1024 flat panels
1 haupauge wintv card
1 dazzle video creator 2
1 3c509 ethernet
2 west dig 80 gigs running ata 66 mode.

1 usb umax scanner
1 usb sony mem stick reader
1 Sonf F707 camera.

So read and be aware of the travails of software written by the third string.
