Re gold miners and protection of principal:

Calls don't allow any dividends of course, but if McMillan is right -- you have to have held the shares for over a year before buying the puts or you reduce your holding period to 0 for tax purposes -- is that true?? OTW, I might find the put purchase attractive at some point. How does the IRS know for what purpose I purchase a put anways.
