Unexpected boom in second homes outside NYC since 9-11

The second home by the ocean or in the mountains has always been popular here but areas within commuting distance of the city have experienced a real estate boom since September.

"A lot of families have simply decided to make their second homes their primary homes since September," said Jane Ross, a real estate agent near upstate Woodstock, a two-hour drive from the city. "I think the idea of having a safe haven, especially if you've got kids, is very reassuring to people in a time like this."
