Sure there is a risk, but the risk of green activists scuttling any mining project in the USA, native title wrecking one in Canada or Australia or war in just about any part of Africa are probably just as high or higher than political risk in Venezuela and gold mines are operating in all of those places. There are quite a few foreign based gold miners already operating in Venezuela, and loads of oil company money invested. The risk didn't deter them.
