People are scared shitless to invest

Interesting, I don't see that anywhere. I see people uncomfortable picking bottoms...yet still giving it a shot. Many people's accounts are still working off house money gained. Hell, for grins I left a decent chunk in a jANUS Mercury account that my wife's parents started for her and it's still at a six percent return for five years.

I can't tell you how many times I hear friends swear off ever investing in the stock market

I hear the exact same thing from my peer group. Yet when I ask them what kind of allocation changes they've made, or if they have forgone 401(k) contributions to pay down revolving debt, the answer is invariably the same: "No way, this is great dollar cost averaging".

I think what our friends are really saying is when they get a chunk of money they aren't willing to blindly throw it in the market like they have in recent years past. But that is swearing off of gambling, not investing.

Nevertheless, it's a revelation seeing people's attitudes to these market swoons.
