If an individual or individuals were contacted with prior knowledge of the attack and someone, however loosely, connected with this individual or individuals is said to also have had such prior knowledge, might not those who initiated the contact begin a discreet yet possibly traceable inquiry into how this loosely connected individual received the prior knowledge?
If there WAS prior knowledge communicated the loosely connected individual wouldn't necessarily have to have received it. Just the "suggestion" that he did may be enough.
