Police arrest Israelis, seize truck with explosives traces in Washington state

May. 14, 2002

Police in Washington state arrested two Israelis last week after traces of TNT and RDX explosives were reportedly found in a truck they were traveling in.

The two were arrested last Tuesday after being stopped for speeding near the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, according to a report appearing on the Fox News website.

Police, using bomb-sniffing dogs, found trace amounts of the explosives on the gear shift and steering wheel. Traces of the materials were also discovered on one of the vehicle's occupants.

High-tech equipment was used later to confirm the presence of TNT and RDX plastic explosive.

The Israelis told the police during questioning they were residing illegally in the US.

The two were charged with illegal residence in the US.

The FBI, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and local police are all investigating, the report said.

Government officials told Fox News the roadside stop was so close to the naval air station that military personnel also took part in the initial arrest and naval intelligence has been involved in the subsequent investigation.
