The target audience for the prosecutor's hyperbole was not necessarily us (the public). The real targets were the indicted and any as-yet unindicted co-conspirators, organization insiders who may not have been privy to the crimes but have other useful information, and outside parties with otherwise intimate knowledge of both the enterprise and the conspirators.

If someone is withholding knowledge of information that may be useful to the prosecutors, they may be more inclined to cooperate now rather than take on the much larger risk of being accused of being a traitor.
