"are we in too deep?"
As LBJ and Nixon's disasterous experience proved, better late than never.
A day without making war against some impoverished third-world country, would be like a sunny day.
Does anyone really think these nothing to lose kleptocracies can be "taught a lesson" in a way that makes any sense to Americans? We have no reason to be in any ofthese countries, except to protect business interests, which can be protected in other ways. Only capturing and bringing to justice those that perpetrate these crimes of mass destruction makes any sense, and that requires careful investigation, and everyone's help. The large military maneuvers fail to impress those most important: the suicidal terrorist leaders. Nuke the caves in Afghanistan? It would cause more recruits than it eliminated. Occupy? That's a sure way for a "forever war".
Exactly what is the plan for success, have you heard? So far, I've only heard this:"we'll go after them everywhere, cut off their funding, bomb their camps, and so forth".
Which is undercut by last week's statements, "... but this won't work, there will be more terrorist acts in the US, even larger ones, but that's ok "we" can live with that"
In fact, that message is this: "We hereby surrender America's lifestyle, for the rest of our lives. Just give up and become targets. We in the military and Executive Branch will do the rest, and if it gets tough, we'll go into our bunkers, and you can hear from us over the radio."
IMO this will all change quicker than anyone realizes. Another major terrorist attack against the US, and the people will make a decision either to support on faith some as-yet undefined worldwide campaign, which no one seems to be able to make the case will stop terrorism ("we'll go get 'em! is all they can say, unconvincingly), or finally a mandate to get the hell out of these no-account third world quagmires, in spite of the administration and Congress. |
